Bob Dylans großartiges zweites Album ist vollkommen anders als sein Vorgänger. Während Dylan sich auf seinem Debütalbum als herausragender Interpret von Folk- und Bluesklassikern und als hochtalentierter Sänger einen Namen machte, enthält diese Platte einige seiner aufsehenerregendsten Stücke aus den Sechzigern: "Blowin' in the Wind", "Masters of War", "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall", "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" und "I Shall Be Free". Wer dabei an eine Auswahlliste für einen "Greatest Hits"-Sampler denkt, liegt richtig. Nat Hentoffs Begleittext klingt zwar auf eine bereits rührende Weise angestaubt, doch Dylans typischer Gesang, seine unberechenbaren Texte, sein unnachahmliches Gitarren- und Mundharmonikaspiel nehmen es, was ihre Aussage und Eindringlichkeit betrifft, mit dem, was heute so im Radio läuft, noch allemal auf. (So weit, so gut, aber es kommt noch besser: Einige erstklassige Auskopplungen aus Freewheelin' sind auch auf dem Bootleg Series Box Set.) --Jimmy Guterman

Bob Dylans inzwischen beispiellose Plattenkarriere ist eine Saga voller unerwarteter Wendungen. Wir erinnern uns: Er hatte angefangen, wieder mit Daniel Lanois als Produzenten zu arbeiten und mit ihm 1997 Time Out Of Mind aufgenommen, sein stimmigstes und bestes Album seit beinahe einem Jahrzehnt. Jetzt ist der Altmeister der musikalischen Trendsabotage und des beziehungsreichen Wortspiels wieder da: mit der am besten durchdachten und gespielten Songkollektion seit Oh Mercy, einer weiteren Lanois-Produktion aus dem Jahr 1989.

Schon wenn der erste Titel "Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum" eingeblendet wird, ist zu spüren, dass die große Tourerfahrung Dylan und seine Band (inklusive Charlie Sexton an der Gitarre) zu einer schlagkräftigen musikalischen Einheit gemacht hat. Dylans nölig-raue Stimme klingt wie eh und je; das Erstaunliche hier sind die Songs. Das Midtempo-Stück "Mississippi" steht mit seiner soliden Melodie den besten Titeln auf Time Out Of Mind, für das es eigentlich auch geschrieben wurde, in nichts nach. Die R&B-Swing-Nummer (ja, Swing!) "Summer Days" wird von Dylan überzeugend intoniert.

"Honest With Me" ("I'm not sorry for nuthin' I've done / I'm glad I fight, I only wished we'd won") ist ein treibender, druckvoller Rocksong. Das entspannte "Bye And Bye" und das erzählende "Floater (Too Much to Ask)" zeugen von außerordentlichem Selbstbewusstsein. Dylan selbst bezeichnet diese Songs als "bluesorientiert", doch gerade derjenige Titel, von dem man wohl am ehesten typische Bluesklänge erwartet, "High Water (for Charlie Patton)", klingt -- und das ist wieder einmal typisch Dylan -- wie eine banjobetonte Wildwestballade. Aber das ist eben Dylans Gabe: immer von Neuem zu überraschen. --Robert Baird
