Wie die meisten der besten Talente des R&B (D'Angelo, Lynden David Hall, Erykah Badu, Chico Debarge, The Roots und Macy Gray -- bevor sie zur lebenden Legende und zum Markennamen wurde) passt auch Jill Scott nicht so ganz genau in eine Marketing-Zielgruppen-Planung. Die exquisiten, unterkühlten Sounds auf ihrem Album mit dem so treffend gewählten Namen Who Is Jill Scott? -- einerseits Jazz-Funk gemischt mit langsamem und sexy klingendem, vom Hip-Hop inspirierten Soul -- passen in keine Schublade. Ebenso wie Erykah Badu und Meshell Ndegéocello ist Jill Scott mit einer Stimme gesegnet, die sich mühelos zwischen intim gesprochenen Liebesgedichten und aufregenden Melodien bewegen kann. Wie D'Angelo sind ihre Grooves eine subtile Mischung von Funk-Soul und sinnlichem Jazz. Und wie bei all den oben erwähnten Namen klingt Jill Scott so, als ob sie jedes Wort mit sexuellen Anspielungen ernst meint, wenn sie zum Beispiel bei "It's Love" wissen möchte, wie es ihr Liebhaber denn haben möchte, wenn sie die Nebenbuhlerin abschrecken möchte bei "Getting in the Way" und bei "Long Walk" ein intimes Treffen vorschlägt. Was bei Who Is Jill Scott? allerdings noch fehlt, ist die hervorragende Single, die ihr endlich das allseits bekannte Markenzeichen verleihen würde, das sie eigentlich verdient hat. --Dan Gennoe
